Farewell to Bob Fried

Mr. Robert Fried, President of the Astronomical League from 1974-75 and 1977-78, died in a plane crash last November 13, 2003, near Black Canyon, Arizona. Bob was a retired Delta Airlines captain and a long-time friend of the Astronomical League. When past League President, Jerry Sherlin, first became interested in astronomy in 1952, Bob was one of the first amateur astronomers Jerry met near Chattanooga, TN. In retirement Bob often flew people, in his own plane, from outlying areas to the city for medical care; apparently he was alone when his plane crashed. There was a memorial service for him at Lowell Observatory.
