The British Astronomical Association is a largest organization for the amateur astronomer in the UK. Founded in 1890, it encourages amateur astronomers through meetings, sectional groups and its publications.

But the BAA is not restricted to residents of the UK. Its wide variety of observing programs, and its well-written publications have made it a favorite of amateurs around the world. There are over five-hundred members in the United States alone!

BAA observing sections include the following:

  • Comet
  • Instruments & Imaging
  • Asteroids & Remote Planets
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Variable Stars
  • Deep Sky
  • Lunar
  • Computing
  • Solar
  • Meteor

In addition to offering instruction and guidance, each section publishes periodic reports in the popular Journal of the British Astronomical Association. Many publish their own journals.

There is something in the BAA for every amateur astronomer. Many of the most famous amateur observers in the world began there. This organization is well worth the consideration of any amateur astronomer.
